John Michael Liles signs 4 year contract with Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed 31 year old defensemen John-Michael Liles to a new 4 year contract extension, avoiding Liles becoming an unrestricted free agent. The deal is worth $15.5 million with an annual cap hit of $3.875 million which is slightly lower then his current cap hit of $4.2 million.

Liles who has been out with a concussion since December 22, 2011 has 4 goals and 17 assists in 34 games, his first as a member of the Leafs. Brian Burke acquired Liles in the summer to bolster the clubs powerplay and Liles was doing a fine job until his injury.

This does make things interesting in Leafland with many NHL defensemen on the club roster the Liles signing could be the first domino to fall in a long plan to obatin a top 6 scoring forward.
